People who live or work in Derby are being encouraged to turn their commute into an active one this September and take part in the A – Derby Travel Challenge.
Whether it be getting off the bus a few stops early and walking the rest of the way to work, choosing to cycle to the office one-day-a-week or walking the kids to school, the ‘A – Derby Travel Challenge’ aims to encourage people to make small changes to their day that can make a big difference.
Run by Active Derbyshire in partnership with Derby City Council, participants can sign up to the challenge for free at www.workplacechallenge.org.uk/derbyshire where they can then log details every time they have travelled actively.
Each time they log that they have walked, run or cycled to or from work or school, participants will earn points which will be added to a challenge leaderboard.
The challenge will run from Saturday 1st September to Sunday 30th September, and each week one participant will be selected at random to win a spot prize. At the end of the challenge the overall winner will be the person who saves the highest amount of CO2 throughout the challenge by being active instead of using the car or public transport.
Prizes include an intu gift card, a Fitbit alta, a Cycle Derby goodie bag, two places for the Jingle Jog at Markeaton Park on December 2nd, and four VIP tickets for the Great British Tea Festival at The Roundhouse in Derby on October 21st.

You need to record both time and distance; to help calculate distance use the average walking pace of 20 minutes per mile and average cycling pace of eight minutes per mile.
