Derby City Council is offering an amnesty through the month of September for people to ‘own up’ to claiming the council tax single person discount when they are not entitled to it.

Currently out of around 109,000 dwellings within the City, approximately 40,000 are receiving a single person discount and the Council is set to step up efforts to identify fraudulent claims using intelligent data matching.

However, for a limited time, we are offering the chance for those who are not entitled to the discount to cancel their claim with no further questions asked. Claims can be cancelled by sending an email with the subject ‘SPD Amnesty’ to council.tax@derby.gcsx.gov.uk  or by calling 01332 642428.

A spokesperson for the council said “If you’re getting a single person discount and are not entitled to it, tell us and we’ll simply amend your account and take it no further. If you don’t, then we will use intelligent data matching to compare records for the existence of a second person and if you are not entitled  we will backdate the cancellation as far as evidence will allow and in certain cases we’ll also impose a civil penalty which means an additional £70 on your council tax bill.”

Councillor Baggy Shanker said “Being intelligence led means we can concentrate our resources on those cases presenting the highest risk providing much needed additional income to the council.

“We want to send out a strong message that the council will not tolerate fraud – of any type”
