Windrush Day, Saturday 22nd June, marks the anniversary of the arrival of MV Empire Windrush at Tilbury Docks in 1948.  There are a series of events across Derby taking place to celebrate and commemorate the occasion and the contribution of those who arrived on that day and those that followed.

Professor Cecile Yvonne Wright, Chair of the Derby Windrush Planning Group said:

“The people who arrived in Britain from the Caribbean on the Empire Windrush represented a significant moment in contemporary Britain. Their descendants and those who followed them have made and continue to make an enormous contribution to Britain and particularly the city of Derby not just in the vital work of rebuilding the country, the city and public services following World War Two but in enriching our shared social, economic, cultural and religious life. “

Cllr Jon Smale: Cabinet Member for Communities, Neighbourhoods and Streetpride said:

“I’m thrilled that we are celebrating Windrush day in Derby and I’m looking forward to the events over the weekend. It is a valuable reminder to us all of the contributions made by those who came from the Caribbean all those years ago and the continuing contributions of their descendants.”
