Summer is a fantastic time to visit Derby’s award-winning parks with family and friends and get involved in the activities on offer. Last week’s free superhero picnics in the park have been enjoyed by many local families dressed as superheroes at themed picnic events taking place in five popular Derby parks.
There were an estimated 5,000 visitors at Markeaton Park on Monday 31 July and approx. 1,000 visitors attending the event at Darley Park on Tuesday 1 August.
This weekend, the Outdoor Theatre and Cinema Season is back in full swing, with two films on show in August. Firm favourites Mamma Mia! (PG) and Grease (PG) will be screened at
Markeaton Park’s Craft Village on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 August, both starting at 9pm.
The hit films will be fantastic entertainment on a summer evening, with catering available for the full experience! Tickets are priced at £13 and can be purchased at the Derby Live website.
Derby City Council organised themed events to celebrate Love Parks Week around the city from Monday 31 July to Friday 4 August. Love Parks is a community hub with a focus on continual celebration of parks and green spaces throughout Britain, with an annual week of festivities taking place every summer to encourage people to celebrate their local park.
Markeaton Park, Darley Park, Derby Arboretum, Chaddesden Park and Sunnydale Park all
hosted events throughout Love Parks Week, with a number of family-friendly activities available throughout the week. Many local businesses and charities were also in attendance.
Families also enjoyed craft workshops from Jumping Clay at Markeaton Park, Darley Park and Chaddesden Park. A relatively new addition to the Markeaton Park Craft Village, Jumping Clay has already proved to be a hit with local families, offering creative workshops throughout the year and workshops during school holidays.
Sporting Futures also attended the Love Parks Week events, enabling families to try out a wide range of different sports and encourage them to keep active together.
Alvaston Park Friends hosted a free Family Fun Day on Sunday 30 July which was an action-packed event enjoyed by the whole family. There were lots of educational activities along with fun sports, music and food events for the local community to get involved in.
Six Derby parks have recently been awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award, which recognises well managed parks and green spaces.
They include Alvaston Park, Chaddesden Park, Darley Park, Derby Arboretum, Markeaton Park and Sunnydale Park.
The Mayor of Derby, Councillor John Whitby attended the Green Flag ceremony in Markeaton Park on Tuesday 1 August and said:
We are absolutely delighted to receive Green Flag Awards for six of our superb parks across the city and six community awards again this year. These awards recognise that Derby has quality parks and green spaces for the whole community to enjoy thanks to the staff and volunteers that manage them so well. Markeaton Park has been rewarded for the excellent provision of children’s play facilities and activities offered within the craft village.”
Looking ahead, Derby’s much loved classical concert, The Hannells Darley Park Concert, is back! Taking place on Sunday 3 September, the concert is one of the UK’s biggest outdoor classical concerts in the stunning natural amphitheatre that is Darley Park. This is an event for everyone to enjoy – an evening of classical music and fireworks.
Tickets cost £2.50 in advance, and £5.00 on the day, from the Derby Live website. Under 16s go free, but will still require a ticket.
During the first three weekends in December, there will be a series of Family Festivities events taking place at Markeaton Park from Saturday 2 December – Sunday 17 December.
Entry is free and there will be festive rides (see onsite for prices) and food, choirs, brass bands and a variety of Christmas activities for all the family to enjoy!
