Most people associate Christmas and the festive season with being surrounded by family and friends, but not everyone is that lucky. Every year, many elderly people spend the festive season alone because they aren’t aware of activities in their community that they could be taking part in.
Our new community led support initiative, Talking Points is helping to combat this by enabling elderly residents in Derby to access local community groups and make new friends through drop-in events that are held across the city.
Bill (not his real name), a gentleman in his late 60’s, was dependent on alcohol for a number of years and together with his daughter, approached Talking Points for help and advice so that he could start taking part in his local community without the need for more traditional social care services.
The social care worker that Bill and his daughter met at Talking Points, was able to provide information on a number of local community facilities that could support Bills needs such as Local Area Coordination which can provide access to community events and activities.
Bill was also given information on local lunch clubs to help increase his social activities and details of a meal provider to support Bill with his healthy dietary requirements.
Are you worried about a resident in your community who might be lonely? Put them in contact with Talking Points or one of our Local Area Coordinators and help them to play a bigger part in their local community.
