On Monday 18 February, the Council’s Highways teams will begin resurfacing work on Monk Street, Abbey Street and Curzon Street as part of the Abbey Street improvement works and to address road surface issues along Curzon Street.

The work has been planned during the school half-term holiday between 8.00am and 5.00pm, when traffic levels are lower to reduce disruption to residents.

The resurfacing of Monk Street and Abbey Street is being funded by a Capital scheme to improve that junction, whilst the Curzon Street element is being funded by the Department for Transport Pothole Action Fund. The schemes have been coordinated to make best use of the funding, reduce the need for repeated road closures and to limit disruption.

Bus services will continue to run along diversion routes. Delays should be minimal but you can check the operator’s websites for further information.

The scheme will be split into two phases;

  • Phase 1 will see the junction of Abbey St closed with Newland St and Monk St from Monday 18th February to Wednesday 20th February. Diverted traffic will be signposted via Mercian Way and Curzon Street and via Macklin Street and Green Lane.
  • Phase 2 will see Curzon Street closed between Friar Gate and both Friary and Newland Street between Wednesday 20th February and Friday 22nd February. Traffic diversion will be signposted via Stafford Street, Ford Street, Cathedral Road and Bold Lane.
