As part of a big investment in Children’s homes across the city, Queensferry Gardens Children’s Home is undergoing a transformation to bring it up to modern standards and will be the 100th considerate constructor scheme in the city.

The Considerate Constructor scheme is operated by a non-profit organisation which aims to improve the image of construction to local communities, clients and industry professionals. By taking part in the scheme, Derby City Council is demonstrating its commitment to ensuring that contractors and constructors are operating to the highest standards and show care for the local community, the environment and their workforce.

As part of the Queensferry project, contractors, George Hurst and Sons Ltd have worked with the local community to engage them ahead of the refurbishment work taking place including visiting a local school to educate the children on the dangers of playing on building sites and the opportunity to visit a construction site to learn more about health and safety.

Leaflets have also been distributed to local residents informing them of the project start date, completion date and contact details in the event of any issues caused by the work such as noise, dust or access issues.

Councillor Sara Bolton, Cabinet member for Children and Young People and safeguarding says about the news:

“It is vitally important that we invest in our young people and this commitment to provide modern, high quality accommodation for our looked after children will help us ensure that they are getting the best possible start in life. I welcome the news that the work taking place at Queensferry is part of the considerate constructor’s scheme and I hope this will help to minimise any disruption to the local community whilst we create a beautiful new home for the children in our care.”

Derby City Council committed to spending £4.8m on four children’s homes which included building two new homes and refurbishing two existing homes to provide high quality accommodation for children and staff. The fourth Children’s home project is Cricklewood Children’s home in Mackworth, where work is due to start early this summer.
