We have been recognised for our disability equality in employment work by the Department of Work and Pensions.

We are now a Disability Confident Leader, which means we will act as Disability Confident Champions with our local and business communities.

The Disability Confident Scheme supports employers to make the most of the talents disabled people can bring to the workplace.

It involves:

  • challenging attitudes
  • increasing the understanding of disability equality
  • removing barriers
  • making sure disabled people have opportunities to fulfil their potential.

In partnership with DWP, our first job as a Leader, is to host an event on Wednesday 28 March (event is now full) to mark World Autism Week.

The event is to share good practice on disability equality in employment and in particular on being an autism friendly workplace.

Councillor Martin Repton, Cabinet Member for Integrated Health and Care said:

What better way to mark World Autism Week than to share ideas and practical advice on being an Autism friendly workplace.  Despite many positive qualities, we know from research that only 16% of autistic people are in employment and many of these jobs are part-time.  Things have got to change as this is clearly not acceptable and we hope our event will encourage and help more employers to employ disabled people, including autistic people.
