Following a hugely successful track season winning a haul of international medals team Derby Arena based KGF rider Charlie Tanfield has been selected to join British Cycling’s most elite team.

Tanfield is now part of British Cycling’s Podium Programme, joining the likes of Olympic champion Ed Clancy. Riders from the Podium Programme represent Great Britain at the highest level including the Olympic Games. The move comes on the back a remarkable year for Charlie Tanfield. The young rider has secured Gold medals at the Minsk World Cup, become World Champion in the Team pursuit and Commonwealth Champion in the Individual pursuit.

World and Commonwealth Champion, Charlie Tanfield said:

“I’m delighted to find out I’ve been selected onto the Great Britain Cycling Team. It’s great to see that all the hard work has paid off.

“I have some very high ambitions which I want to achieve during my cycling career and the Great Britain Cycling Team men’s endurance programme fills me with confidence that I’m the right place.

“Racing, living and training with the KGF boys has been absolutely great and I enjoyed every minute of it, even the 7.00am training sessions. I’ve made some great mates and would like to thank them for a great season of racing and for putting the team together. I’m sure they’ll have some great races next year, I’ll just be on the other side of the track.”

Derby Arena, Head Coach, Phil Kilpatrick, said:

“It has been great to have Charlie training out of Derby Arena and he has shown what is possible to local riders who are in a similar situation. To have a rider reach the highest step within British Cycling having developed at Derby Arena shows how valuable the facility is. This has only been possible by having excellent staff from coaches to the reception team who have all contributed in their own areas of work. I’m excited to see how many more riders over the coming years come to Derby Arena to progress and achieve their targets”

Councillor Alan Grimadell, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said:

“We’re proud of the high level of success Charlie has achieved from training at Derby Arena. We’re excited to see even more athletes rising to the highest level, and we wish Charlie all the best with British Cycling.”
