This festive period we have been looking at the local charities and community groups that Councillor Linda Winter, the Mayor of the City of Derby, supports.

Today we look at charity Children First Derby, which supervises contact in a friendly and safe environment between looked after children (children in care) and their families.

Its purpose is to relieve the distress and suffering experienced by families and children in Derby – in particular, those who have suffered from, or are likely to suffer from violence or maltreatment in their homes.

The charity was founded in 1974 as ‘Concern Association Derby’ by Derby resident Ethleen Mildred Wigley after reading about the death of a neglected child.

It acted as a meeting place for parents to attend and discuss any issues they have been facing. Now it employs 11 staff and works with more than 60 volunteers.
