Derby City Council want to reassure the community following a terrorism-related charge involving a man from Derby.
Local man Mudassir Hussain (30) has been charged with engaging in the preparation of an act of terrorism, contrary to Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
Mr Hussain, of Gladstone Street, Derby, was arrested at Heathrow Airport on January 23, 2017, after being detained by the Turkish authorities and returned to the UK.
He appeared before Westminster Magistrates Court yesterday.
The case is not connected to the investigation in December where four people in Derby were arrested for terrorism offences.
Cabinet member for Cohesion and Integration, Asaf Afzal said:
It is important that we continue to recognise that these are isolated incidents and I’m re-assured that this arrest is not linked to other recent arrests and I’m also re-assured that the authorities are identifying and arresting people suspected of travelling abroad to commit terrorist offences, keeping our communities safe. It is important to recognise and acknowledge that Derby is a safe place to live, and our different communities get on well together.
If anyone in the community is concerned or has worries about a friend, neighbour or family member we would encourage them to get in touch.
