With the festive season approaching and preparations underway for the return of the Christmas Lights Switch-On, Derby LIVE would like to invite local acts, community groups, dance groups and performers to apply to take part in the parade.

This year’s Christmas Lights Switch-On will take place on Saturday 18th November. The Christmas parade and Derby City Council organised Switch-on event did not take place last year, so it’s exciting that the much-loved event is making a return to the city as part of the delivery of one of the Council’s 50 Pledges to ensure Derby is a safe, strong and ambitious city. Gem 106 is the Official Radio Station for Derby Christmas Lights Switch-on this year, and they will be hosting the stage show. The full programme for the event will be announced this Autumn.

The celebrations on the Market Place will begin from 3.30pm, with a festive parade that will travel down from The Spot at 4.30pm, through the City Centre to the Market Place.

Councillor Amo Raju, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said:

“We are looking forward to organising the celebrations at this year’s festive lights and switch-on event. There is a wealth of talent in Derby and we encourage local acts and groups to apply to perform at the Christmas parade, which can be enjoyed by the whole community.”

Those interested in taking part should be available between 3.00pm and 6.00pm on Saturday 18th November and should apply by emailing Sally Greatorex from Derby LIVE’s Outdoor Events team or by calling 01332 640848.

UPDATE:

For clarification, a Derby City Council spokesperson said:

We look forward to this year’s Christmas Lights Switch On parade and event and invite all community groups in Derby to get involved. As normal, we put out requests to local media organisations to consider applying to be our media partner, as we do for a number of our major events.

“This year, Gem 106 is the official media partner for the Christmas Lights Switch On event, at no cost to the Council. This is a cost neutral media partnership contra deal in which marketing opportunities and profile are offered to the media partner in return for widely advertising the event and providing hosts and music at the event.

“Having community groups, local families and residents on board and excited about the Christmas Lights Switch On is one of the main reasons we look forward to running the event. We thank all groups for their involvement in last year’s celebrations, which the Council was delighted to support in the form of the free loan of crowd barriers, event management guidance and expertise, and advice on correct documentation.  Derby LIVE also paid for two of their outdoor events team to be on hand, should their expertise be required throughout the event.

“A meeting was held on 2nd March of this year with representatives of the organisers of last year’s event at which the Council confirmed Derby LIVE would be leading on the 2017 Christmas Light Switch On event.”
