Love Your Local Market fortnight has started and Derby City Council is encouraging the people of Derby to come and support the historic Market Hall.

Entertainment on Wednesday (17 May) included compere, Dapper Dan from Furthest From the Sea and live music was provided by local singers/musicians, Natasha Cartwright, Ajay Henry and Rebecca Jayne from 11.30am onwards.

The Mayor of Derby, Linda Winter attended to officially open a new stall selling Caribbean produce and run by Lloyd Jackson who has joined the Market Hall trader family.

Mr Jackson, who is an experienced trader said:

“I am very excited to be bringing my unique mix of Caribbean products to Derby Market Hall and welcoming new customers through the doors. I was keen to start trading, as soon as possible and I was pleased my trader application was completed in eight weeks.”

“I feel that the support and advice provided by the traders and the Markets team will help me to develop my new business.”

Cassandra Carruthers, Derby City Council’s Markets Officer said:

“Mr Jackson is the first of three new traders joining us at Derby Market Hall over the coming weeks. We offer new trader incentives to anyone who wishes to be part of an established market community in an iconic local building. This place is close to many people’s hearts including mine and we are now on the path to restore it back to a vibrant and bustling market for everyone in Derby to visit.”

One of the Council’s key pledges is to transform the Market Hall and plans will be developed next summer to move the project forward. Current development work will see the launch of new Derby Market Hall branding, upgrade of digital channels such as Twitter and Facebook and a new website. There will also be a programme of improvement work planned for stalls.
