There are two great free events taking place in Derby city centre on Saturday 22nd July 2017

Derby Mela

Surtal Arts is delighted to bring you the ‘Derby Mela’(In Association with Akaal Channel) – 12.00pm to 6.00pm.

Join us for a fun packed festival with locations all over the city celebrating arts from Southern Asia and debuting our exciting work from the Surtal Arts Connect project.

From our main stage located in the centre of Derby (outside Tourist Information Centre, Market Place) we are proud to present live performances from the world music collective, Suns of Arqa; internationally renowned, DJ Frenzy; Panjabi folk/hip-hop producer, Tru-Skool; fantastic folk singer, Gurj Sidhu; bhangra singer and record producer, Sukshinder Shinda and much, much more.

Elsewhere in the city you can join us at the Derby Quad for a mentoring session with Tru-Skool or Gurj Sidhu or a digital workshop. In the Market Place you can enjoy a plethora of food stands where you can try different meals from all over the world.  Meanwhile over at the Guildhall Theatre you can get involved with our workshops in Bollywood Dance, Pan-pipes and drumming, circus skills and yoga or bring the whole family for face painting and henna tattoos.  Or join us at 1pm in the Quad to discuss your heritage and help us prepare for our ‘Dissolving Borders, Building Bridges’ Project.

As you can see there is something for the whole family so come on down and spend the day with us!

In Sync

The In Sync Festival is a fabulous celebration of Derby’s diverse cultures. The day will feature a whole range of music and dance performances from Derby’s diverse cultures.

Running from 11.00am to 2.00pm outside St Peter’s Church and the Spot there will be creative performances by established ethnic minority groups and newer refugee and migrant groups too.

Featuring: Bosnia Pearls, Les Elu, Roma Church,  Kiezma (Yiddish dance), Hoveria (Ukrainian dance), Shakti Dance, New Life Church, Kurdish Dancers, Furthest from the Sea (musicians), Iranian Group, Derby West Indian Community

The day has been organised by Upbeat Communities, on behalf of Derby City Council. Councillor Asaf Afzal said “It’s going to be fun filled family day for the whole community, showcasing the diversity of our city, and a great opportunity for us to all learn more about each other”
