Derby Silk Mill will be bursting with activity on Saturday 28th October as it hosts its biggest ever Mini Maker Faire.

Based on the site of the world’s first factory, The Silk Mill will be full of making, crafting, building, tinkering and interactive stalls, from 10am till 4pm.

A family-friendly highlight of Derby Museums’ annual programme, this will be the sixth Derby Mini Maker Faire held at this historic site of the world’s first factory.

This year the event will bring together over 70 Makers, including 3D printing, robots, wearable technology and even a bubbleologist!

Featured makers include Aardman Animations, The Astronaut’s Caravan and Jonny White and his marvellous machines.

This means for the third year running the Maker Showcase Marquee will be outside on Cathedral Green, to house all of the wonderful makers, workshops and stalls.

A variety of Makers will be taking part from all across Derbyshire and countrywide, including the World’s Smallest Photo booth, the Bubble Fairy, a Bubbleologist who will be creating huge bubble displays for the whole family to play along with and a Harry Potter inspired Micro:bit programmed computer.

There will also be an Aardman model making workshop on offer for those who are lucky enough to have booked a place in advance! Participants will receive step-by-step instructions from an Aardman animator to make a Gromit, of Wallace and Gromit.

The event will mark the last day the museum is open to the public, before the building begins its transformation into the Museum of Making at Derby Silk Mill.

The project, once complete, will reveal the whole building for the first time, re-introducing manufacturing to the site of the world’s first factory by involving people in the making and creating of the new museum.

Derby Museums will continue to host Derby Maker Faire, but for 2018 and 2019, plan to take it out ‘on the road’, inviting visitors to take part in the Maker Movement as a part of a pop-up style Faire.

Hannah Fox, Silk Mill Project Director, said:

Our 6th Maker Faire promises to be a wonderful final event before the Silk Mill begins its transformation into the Museum of Making. Over the coming years we aim to take Maker Faire on tour, before it returns to the new museum in 2020.

We are delighted that makers from across the UK and beyond are presenting their ingenuity to visitors of all ages and backgrounds. Maker Faire provides the perfect hands-on experiences at the site of the world’s first factory, to inspire the makers and creators of Derby’s future.”
