Derby Council has announced that it has been working with the city of Kolkata in West Bengal to establish working partnerships between local businesses in the two cities. Earlier this year, Derby welcomed a delegation of officials and businesses from Kolkata, led by the Indian Chamber of Commerce, to begin establishing commercial links between the two cities.
The visitors from the Indian Chambers of Commerce met Councillors, officers and business leaders from across the city to sign a memorandum of understanding, detailing a commitment to work together and move forward as a united partnership. As a first step, it was agreed that both parties will identify ten local businesses that will benefit from exploring partnerships, export and investment opportunities with companies in Derby and Kolkata.
One of the businesses identified is Firstsource Solutions, a RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group company, which is headquartered in Kolkata. Today, Firstsource’s Chief Operating Officer, Sean Canning, arrived in Derby to meet with Councillor Baggy Shanker at their Derby office to renew their company’s commitment to Derby. The company are now seeking to recruit hundreds of people in Derby.
In just a few short months, Derby Council has identified eight interested businesses and the ICC in Kolkata is to source key partners to link with these businesses. The type of products and services provided by these companies range from protecting the environment, supplying machinery and equipment to a variety of sectors, coal fire power regeneration, designing themes for leisure and cultural destinations, video conferencing solutions and law firms.
Councillor Baggy Shanker, Cabinet Member for Finance and Governance said:
“In an increasingly globalised world, it’s important to look beyond the boundaries of our cities and countries to find opportunities for creating jobs, generating investment and stimulating growth.
“It’s important that we develop stronger ties with growing economies like India and I’m delighted that Firstsource have committed themselves to our city.”
Sean Canning, Chief Operating Officer at Firstsource Solutions, added:
“Firstsource is the proud employer of thousands of people in both the UK and India and we look forward to working with Derby Council to further strengthen business ties between the two nations.
We have been incredibly impressed with the commitment and talent of the team in Derby who have worked hard over the past year to create a very successful business in the city. As a result, we are excited to announce that we intend to recruit hundreds of new roles in the coming months, as part of our ongoing commitment as an employer in the city of Derby”
