Derby City Council’s ‘New Year, New You’ fostering campaign culminated with an event that took place on Saturday 28th January at the Mickleover Court Hotel in Derby.
The event was organised to attract those people interested in finding out more about becoming a foster carer, to meet our professional fostering team and some of our current foster carers.
Councillor Sara Bolton Cabinet Member for Children and Young People and Safeguarding said, “It has been a pleasure for me to support this campaign and help to create the level of interest we have received. This is an encouraging start to the year.”
“I hope that many of those who came along to the event will go on to foster with us. It is such a rewarding and fulfilling role which makes a huge difference to our children in care. I would personally like to thank everyone who responded to our campaign, and those who came along last week giving up their personal time to hear more about fostering.”
Eight of the Council’s own professional fostering team and five of our established, highly trained foster carers took part at the event. Two of our foster carers, Mark Slann and Margaret Sidders helped with the presentation providing a first-hand account of their own experiences of foster caring that got to the very essence of what fostering is all about.
Councillor Bolton added that she was particularly thankful for their contribution; their own life experiences greatly assisting the presentations.
In all 23 enquiries were received. The level of genuine interest has been very positive with almost 50% of the enquiries going on to book an initial home visit to progress their application.
