Not a lot is known about the Freeman of the City honour, but those who do will ask the Freeman Committee to investigate their family surname and see if their ancestors are included on the Freemen of the City of Derby Scroll.

After their investigations, when they have a list of several people, the Committee will write into the Mayor’s Office and ask permission for the Mayor to hold a Freeman of the City Ceremony, where those eligible will be presented individually by the Committee to the Mayor, the Mayor will sign his/her name underneath the details of each being admitted, also the Mayor will sign a Freeman of the City of Derby Certificate, which each recipient can take home as a memento, and photographs are taken for ours and their records.

When the formalities are over each recipient is invited to look through the scroll and the transcript of the Roll of Hereditary Freeman of the City from 28 May 1842 to date, which is kept for safekeeping in the Mayor’s Office and historically was kept by the Town Clerk.

The Freedom of the City – to a company or person – is granted via the Council and has to be taken through full council officially, the Freeman of the City is granted by the Mayor of the City and a ceremony organised involving the Mayor, as above – the first is judged on merit and achievement in some way and the second is hereditary/historical.
