On Sunday (30th July), around 30 people from across Derby’s communities came together at Nottingham Road Cemetery for the first Friends of Nottingham Road Cemetery group meeting.

Organised by Derby City Council, with support from Bereavement services, the Neighbourhood teams and Cohesion teams, attendees were offered the chance to not just do their bit and take part in the litter pick but also to meet new people and find new friends on Friendship day.

Opening the event, Councillor Asaf Afzal said:

“Today isn’t just about picking up litter, it’s about bringing together people from all walks of life to form new friendships and to show how much our communities love their neighbourhoods and their city.”

Echoing the words of the late MP Jo Cox, Councillor Afzal finished by saying:

“There are people trying to divide our communities, but we have more that unites us and brings us together, like today’s event.”
