There’s a whole host of activities to do together with grandkids in and around Derby this summer. Keep all ages happy and free from boredom during the holidays with these suggestions.
From Saturday 29th July – Monday 1st August, Derby’s Market Place will be transformed into a seaside playground again. ‘Derby by the Sea’ will have deckchairs and a beach, children’s funfair rides, inflatables, stalls, games to play and lots more. It will be a great way to spend some time with the family without the usual long car journey to the coast. Entry to the beach is free.
For those who want to enjoy the fresh air how about taking a Wild Walk Adventure with grandkids at Markeaton Park? On this outdoor theatrical walk the Babbling Vagabonds will take audiences on a trip discover the rascal who has been stealing the King’s apples. The whodunit will take about an hour to complete. For Rory Mcillroys or Charley Hulls in the making there’s an opportunity to give golf a go at Allestree Park. From now until Thursday 31st August a game of golf is just £5 with free equipment hire. Alvaston Park Family Fun Day on Sunday 30th July from 12pm – 4.00pm is an action packed community event where there is something for the whole family to enjoy. A fun-packed day for all includes sports, music, food, and lots of educational and free activities to join in with. Entry is free.
It’s time to throw on cape and grab a picnic and head on down to one of the Derby Superhero Picnic in the Park events. Craft and nature activities are available, along with ‘Try it’ sessions, the Derby Homes activity van, face painting, superhero competitions and more! Events are taking place between the hours of 11.00am and 3.00pm and entry is free at the following parks:
- Monday 31st Juyl at Markeaton Park
- Tuesday 1st August at Darley Park
- Wednesday 2nd August at Derby Arboretum
- Thursday 3rd August at Chaddesden Park
- Friday 4th August at Sunnydale Park
Budding Junior British Bake Off contestants (aged 5 to 11 years) and their grandparents can brush up their cupcake decorating skills at Springwood Leisure Centre on Tuesday 8th and 22nd August from 10am to 11am and costs £5 each. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
The Mundy Play Centre has been refurbished with new exciting play equipment including a new pirate ship and an adventure hub in the free entry large play areas. There will also be paid activities including a bouncy castle, crazy golf, electric cars and canoes available every weekend, weather dependent. No pre-booking necessary. The recently refurbished Orangery Café at Markeaton Park has a menu to suit all tastes, making it the perfect place to stop for a bite to eat or a cup of tea. Open Monday – Friday 10.00am – 5.00pm, Saturday and Sunday 9.00am – 5.00pm, or till 6.00pm on school and bank holidays.
Water babies, mini mermaids and young sharks can come and have fun with family and friends at the Queens Leisure Centre Pool Party. There will be music, floats and inflatables. It runs every Tuesday and Thursday 1.00pm – 3.00pm in the Gala Pool and is £4.10 each. Family Splash is a fun and easy going session with floats and pool toys. It’s held every Monday, Wednesday, & Friday 1.00pm to 3.00pm and Saturday 10.00am to 3.00pm. Under 5’s family splash is every Monday to Friday 12pm to 1.00pm, Saturday 2.00pm to 4.00pm and Sunday 9.00am to 2:30pm. Family Splash sessions cost £4.25 adults, £3.20 concessions and juniors, under 5s go free.
Treat the grandkids to The Hannells Darley Park Concert, one of the UK’s biggest outdoor classical concerts with fireworks, set in a stunning natural amphitheatre. The event returns on Sunday 3rd September and tickets are £5 (or £2.50 when bought before the day). Under 16’s are free, but require a ticket. Gates open at 2.00pm.
