Holocaust Memorial Day was established in 2001 as an international day to remember the victims of genocides and was fixed on 27th January to coincide with the date of the liberation of Auschwitz in 1945.
Derby has remembered the day since 2001 and there is a week of events surrounding the 27th January each year. This year the 27th January falls on the Jewish Sabbath and the 26th conflicts with the preparations for the Sabbath.
In order to be fully inclusive the main events this year will take place on Thursday 25th January.
In addition to the Holocaust during World War 2, the Armenian genocide, the Ukrainian Holodomor and the genocide of the Bosnian people at Srebrenica are also marked.
The theme each year is set by the national Holocaust Memorial Day Trust and for 2018 it is “The Power of Words”.
