1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year, though many of us are too afraid to talk about it. Talking about mental health doesn’t need to be difficult. It can be as simple as making time to have a cuppa or go for a walk, and listening to someone talk about how they feel.
Being open about mental health and ready to listen can make a positive difference to someone’s life. This is what Time To Talk Day (2nd February) is all about – giving us all the chance to talk and listen about mental health.
Time to Talk Day is Time to Change‘s national movement aiming to get the nation talking about mental health for 24-hours.
Since its launch in 2014, it has sparked millions of conversations in schools, homes, workplaces, in the media and online, and attracted support from celebrities such as Freddie Flintoff, Stephen Fry and Frankie Bridge – and most recently by Prince Harry who reportedly regrets not opening up sooner about the death of his mother Princess Diana.
So this Time to Talk Day, don’t let speaking about mental health feel like a daunting task. Let’s all come together – share how we’re feeling, listen to others, check in on friends, relatives, colleagues and neighbours – and, ultimately, break the silence of stigma!
