Owners of vacant homes in need of renovation are being encouraged to apply for an interest-free loan of up to £20,000.

Derby City Council’s empty homes assistance loan can help bring empty properties back to life and can provide useful accommodation for households facing homelessness. The interest-free loans could be offered to help struggling empty property owners, subject to terms and conditions.

One such loan was offered to Harvey Property Solutions Group who transformed one derelict empty property in the Arboretum Ward into high quality rented accommodation and are currently working on their next exciting empty property project.

Once the property is ready to let there is even a dedicated officer that can help owners find a tenant quickly and offer further support in relation to deposit guarantees, financial assistance for tenants to cover rent in advance or tenancy related fees and direct payment of rent to landlords.

With recent changes to regulations surrounding the private rental market our Decent and Safe Homes (DASH) team can also offer support and advice to new and existing landlords.

Councillor Fareed Hussain, Cabinet Member for Urban Renewal, said:

“I’m delighted that the council is able to offer such a comprehensive service to help bring empty homes back into use. Not only can we help with dealing with the property itself and any work that might need doing on it, we can also help with providing advice on letting and finding a tenant. This helps reduce the blight and waste that empty homes can cause and benefits not only the home owner but also people in need of housing.

“I would encourage anyone that owns an empty home to contact the empty homes service and speak to one of our dedicated officers.”
