Local drivers should expect delays in the region as closures on the M1 are scheduled for the forthcoming weekend.

From Friday 11th May (10.00 pm Southbound and midnight Northbound) to 3.00 pm on Sunday 13th May,  the section of the M1 between Junction 23A and Junction 24 will be closed to all traffic.

The closures will be in place to enable two separate projects of work to happen.

The Kegworth Bypass bridge will be launched over the motorway, south of Ashby Road Bridge, as part of a major infrastructure construction development at SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway.

Separately – and in order to avoid another full closure of the motorway, Highways England will be taking the opportunity to carryout essential bridge waterproofing south of Junction 23A.

A diversion route will be place along the A453 during the weekend closure of the section of the motorway.

As the M1 is one of the UK’s busiest motorways, significant congestion and delays are expected, along the diversion route and the motorway, and drivers are advised to avoid this area if possible and allow for extra time for their journey – in particular if travelling to East Midlands Airport.

The closure may have significant impact on junction 25 and the strategic road network in and around Derby, including the A52 and A38.
