Following updated weather reports on Storm Aileen, Council officers undertook a health and safety inspection of Market Hall.

We are pleased to say that Market Hall will be open today (Wednesday 13th September 2017) from 11.30am today, and close at 5.00pm as usual.

The Council has been working to contact traders, and we are currently expecting the majority of them to be open for business.

Derby’s Market Hall will be closed tomorrow (Wednesday 13 September) as a precautionary safety measure as a result of Storm Aileen.

Four panes of the glass on the roof of the Market Hall are in need of maintenance to prevent them from coming loose during adverse weather conditions. Storm Aileen is forecast to cross Derby in the early hours of tomorrow morning with gusts of between 65-75 mph; therefore the Council has been closely monitoring data from the Met Office and has taken the decision to activate its emergency contingency plan to protect public safety.

The Council would like to reassure the public and Market Traders that outside of these weather events the building remains safe to operate as usual. A review of the weather conditions and the roof will take place on Thursday at 6.00am before the market can be reopened.

This decision has not been taken lightly. The Council apologises for any inconvenience this may cause and the short notice, but public safety has to be our first priority.
