The Mayor of Derby, Councillor John Whitby has set an ambitious £25k fundraising target for his Mayoral year, with a series of charity events set to take place.

Throughout the current municipal year the Mackworth councillor will be raising funds for the Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre, Safe and Sound, Children First, the British Red Cross and the Derby Museums Trust.

To help him reach his target, the Mayor has formed a small working group, made up of volunteers from across Derby City Council, Derby Homes and his chosen charities, to come up with ideas for fundraising.

Amongst the plans to have been put forward are a charity gig hosted by the Mayor, who is a former member of nineties metal band, The Beyond. Other events in the pipeline include a charity quiz night, a sponsored exercise bike ride at venues across the city and the Mayor’s participation in the Derby 10K in April 2018.

Members of the working group have also been hosting samosa sales in the Council House to raise money for the Mayor’s charities, raising almost £450 from two events to date.

The second event took place yesterday and was sponsored by Councillor Balbir Sandhu, who kindly purchased the samosas. More sales are planned over the coming months, with a number of other sponsors already identified.

Councillor Whitby said:

“We’ve got off to a flying start, raising over £2,500 in the first few months. But we’ve got a number of events lined up for the rest of the municipal year where we’re hoping to raise even more.

“It’s great to be working with colleagues from across Derby City Council and Derby Homes to help raise the profile of these fantastic charities. I’d like to thank my chosen charities as well as all the individuals, businesses and organisations who’ve offered to help with my fundraising so far.

If you’ve got your own ideas about how we can raise more money, please do not hesitate to get in touch.”
