Derby City Council has won the Love Parks Award at the Keep Britain Tidy Network awards held on Wednesday night. The award was received in recognition of the Superhero Picnic in the Park events held last summer at Markeaton Park, Darley Park and Chaddesden Park.
The Love Parks Award recognises an outstanding event or campaign during Love Parks week. The aim of the Love Parks initiative is to ensure that residents and visitors use local parks and protect these important green spaces, and this award is given in recognition of a local authority’s ability to increase footfall in their parks.
As part of the twelfth annual Love Parks week in 2018 Derby Parks celebrated the wonderful green spaces in the city with three Superhero Picnic in the Park events in Markeaton Park, Chaddesden Park and Darley Park. These free events gave families the chance to take part in a whole host of activities, with many local businesses and charities in attendance.
Councillor Alan Grimadell, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said:
“Our team does a fantastic job throughout the year, making Derby’s parks great places to visit, and it is to their credit that we receive this national award of recognition.
We would also like to extend our thanks to the volunteer groups and communities that help protect our parks.
In light of this award we are excited to announce the return of the award-winning Superhero Picnic in the Park events for 2019, and believe these will once again be a great opportunity for the people of Derby to enjoy our wonderful parks.”
Superhero Picnic in the Park will be returning to Derby Parks this summer, at Markeaton Park on Tuesday 30 July, Chaddesden Park on Wednesday 31 July, and Darley Park on Thursday 1 August. Find out more about these free events on the Derby Parks website
Alongside the summer Superhero Picnic in the Park events Derby Parks hosts events throughout the year, from the Outdoor Theatre and Cinema season held at Markeaton Park Craft Village from June to August to Family Festivities in the lead up to Christmas.
