The swearing in of Derby’s third Youth Mayor has taken place as part of the Council’s Annual Meeting.
Khanya Simbani was elected by the Voices in Action Youth Council in February and takes over the role from outgoing Youth Mayor Philip Hutchinson.
She is joined by the new Deputy Youth Mayor, Jawaria Nadeem.
Both Khanya, better known as Tiny, and Jawaria were among 12 young people from across Derby who took part in the Youth Mayor elections.
All of the young people were presented with certificates for their participation by new Mayor of Derby Councillor John Whitby, while Tiny and Jawaria were formally sworn in.
Tiny, a Year 11 pupil at Littleover Community School, said: “Since the election in February I’ve been desperate to begin the role and now I can’t wait to get started.
“I’ve got plenty of ideas about how I would like to involve the young people of our city in my civic year, including running competitions and attending school assemblies.
“It is an absolute privilege to represent them.”
As well as attending ceremonial functions, the Youth Mayor is able to attend meetings of Council Cabinet – the authority’s executive decision-making body – and make representations on behalf of young people to councillors.
