Following a recent discussion at the National Children’s and Adults Conference with the Minister of State for Children & Families, Rt Hon Robert Goodwill, I was moved to write directly to him to make our case for continued investment in public services to help us to meet ever increasing demand particularly in Early Help and preventative services.

As you will see from my letter to the Minister, the administration here in Derby firmly believes that providing early help and support to children and families is the only way to manage demand and improve outcomes for them in the long term.

As Cabinet Member and a ward Councillor, I personally see the hard work and commitment of senior leaders, middle managers and front line staff as well as partner agencies, who work together to improve outcomes for some of our most vulnerable children and young people in our city.

I have asked that the government uses its autumn statement to reaffirm their commitment to children and young people and so far, I have received an acknowledgement from Number 10 Downing Street, as well as letters of support from Chris Williamson MP and Dame Margaret Beckett MP.

We can only hope that the Minister takes on board our concerns, and those of other authorities who have pledged to write to him raising similar concerns.
