Parents need to apply to Derby City Council by the middle of next month to get their child’s infant or primary school place for September 2017.

Applications for children who were born between 1st September 2012 and 31st August 2013 and those transferring from Infant to Junior School will close at midnight on Sunday 15th January.

Applying online is the easiest method. Just visit the school admissions section of our website. Applying online is quicker and allows parents to make changes to their application at any point up to the closing date. Anyone who applies online also receives an email to confirm their application has been received.

Parents who do not have access to a computer can call on 01332 642730 between 8.30am and 5.00pm on weekdays and we will fill it in on their behalf or we can send you a paper copy.

If you make your application online, you will be able to access your decision on 18th April 2017 – National Offer Day. If you apply by phone or on a paper form your offer letter will be posted on 18th April 2017, second class. No decision will be given over the telephone.

When completing the application form parents will be asked to list, in order of preference, the three schools they would most like their child to go to.

Although parents have a legal right to express preferences they have no automatic right to a place at any particular school.

We will send you our decision which will be one of these three outcomes:

  • School place is offered where your child meets the criteria for a place at the first preferred school.
  • School place is offered where your child meets the criteria for a place at the second or subsequent highest ranked preferred school.
  • Where it is not possible to offer you the highest ranked school, your child will be added to that school’s waiting list and you are informed of how to appeal to the Independent Appeal Panel if you wish.

You can also track your application process online.

Councillor Sarah Russell, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said:

Starting school is a huge milestone for children and their parents. I encourage Derby parents to make sure they have completed, and submitted their application by the deadline to ensure their child is able to start school next September. Missing the deadline could mean missing out on a place at your local school.

Applications submitted to Derby City Council after the deadline will not be considered until places have been allocated to those children whose parents did return their form on time.
