A man has been arrested as Safer Neighbourhood teams in Peartree and Normanton support Derby City Council civil enforcement officers to enforce parking restrictions in the area.
The arrest comes as officers from the teams have been patrolling with the council staff to ensure that drivers are not parking in dangerous and illegal situations.
Sergeant Keith Chambers, who is in charge of the Safer Neighbourhood teams for the area, explained:
“Parking in contravention of restrictions on the street is an issue that is policed by the Derby City Council parking wardens, however we have been only too happy to support them with this because they have told us they are experiencing abuse and threats of violence whilst on patrol.
“The restrictions are put in place to ensure the safety of other road users and so it is important that they are adhered to. “
“It was whilst we were supporting such action that a man was arrested on Lower Dale Road, Derby after allegedly abusing a warden.”
Soheel Aslam, 28 years, of Belgrave Street, Derby was arrested on Wednesday, February 15th and later charged with the offences of assaulting a police community support officer and causing criminal damage to a police vehicle. He is due to appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, March 7th.
Councillor Asaf Afzal, Cabinet Member for Cohesion and Integration, said:
“The reason the council has civil enforcement officers, more commonly known as parking wardens, is because some people don’t follow the rules and park illegally. We have parking regulations to protect not only other road users, but pedestrians as well.
“I welcome the support of Derbyshire police in this matter, and hope that through working together, we can all be more considerate to each other and keep Derby moving.”
Sergeant Chambers added:
“The joint patrols will continue whilst we work with the council to ensure that people are fully aware of the restrictions, the need to adhere to them and that abusive and threatening behaviour towards the wardens will not be tolerated.”
