Sajda Kausar, Public Health Community Engagement Officer, has been awarded the Derby and Derbyshire Inspirational Woman in the health sector award 2017.
The awards are organised by Derby-based organisation, Vox Feminarum, which works to highlight women’s issues and to promote equality.
The awards ceremony, which is now in its fourth year, is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the contributions, determination and success of women from all over Derbyshire.
After receiving the award Sajda said:
I was delighted to be awarded the title of Inspirational Woman of the Year in the category of Health and it was a real honour to be recognised by peers for my work. I have been working with community groups on themes such as community safety housing, equalities, regeneration and women’s projects since 1993 and have held a health promotion role since 2007.
I strive to make sure that health messages reach communities especially those who may not read newspapers or watch mainstream TV channels. I try to ensure that those facing health inequalities are informed of choices with regard to their health and well being, be it diet and lifestyle, screening programmes that they need to take up or signs and symptoms of diseases, recognising when to go to their GP.
Helping to raise bowel screening rates at a local surgery due to our intervention as a Community Engagement Team was a real boost and applauded by the surgery in question. My focus in this role is to help individuals take ownership of their health and to improve the quality of their lives through good health and I hope to keep making an impact.
Cheryl Davidson, Sajda’s line manager, was first to offer her congratulations and said:
Sajda is a driving force in community engagement events and health workshops in health prevention. Raising awareness around bowel cancer, TB and diabetes in hard-to-reach communities in Derby are key areas that Sajda has made a difference. We were delighted to see Sajda nominated for the award.
Councillor Martin Repton, Cabinet Member for Integrated Health and Care, said:
This award is testament to the hard work Sajda has done in raising awareness of various health campaigns and reaching out to communities throughout Derby. She is a credit to the organisation and we’re delighted that her passion and dedication have been recognised with this award.
The Derby and Derbyshire Inspirational Women’s awards ceremony took place on 4 March at The Waterfall, Railway Terrace in Derby and was an inspirational evening of live performance, speeches and award conferment ceremonies.
Sajda was selected through a combination of public voting and panel consideration and, in recognition of her achievement, Sajda received a prestigious trophy and certificate.
