St. Mary’s Primary school council were taken on a guided tour of the Council House last week to learn about the history of the council and how local government works.

The pupils were shown around the Council Chamber where they held their own meeting and posed questions to the Cabinet Member for Safeguarding and Children and Young People, Cllr Sara Bolton who lead the tour.

During the morning the young people were shown around the Jacob Rivers Room where the Mayor of Derby hosts civic engagements.

The young people enjoyed looking through the gallery of previous Mayors of Derby and had the challenge of identifying former Mayor of Derby, Cllr Bolton.

Cabinet Member for Safeguarding and Children and Young People, said:

It was my pleasure to host the school council from St. Mary’s Primary. I hope they enjoyed the morning and have gained some valuable insight into how the council works and the history behind it. They are a real credit to their school and their families.”

Mrs Russell, Deputy Headteacher, said:

What an amazing opportunity for St Mary’s pupils; being privileged enough to have a behind the scenes look at local government. They loved every minute, thank you Cllr Bolton for the wonderful experience.”
